The luxury industry is undergoing a quiet revolution. Lab-grown diamonds are projected to reach 20% of the global diamond market by 2030. Lab-grown moissanite is already the default choice in premium affordable jewellery. And a new generation of European consumers is driving this shift β not because they want to compromise on quality, but because they refuse to compromise on ethics.
The Case Against Mined Stones
Diamond mining has a well-documented environmental and human cost. Each carat of mined diamond displaces roughly 250 tonnes of earth. Mining operations consume enormous amounts of water and energy, disrupt ecosystems, and in some regions are linked to forced labour and conflict financing.
These are not fringe concerns. A 2024 survey by the European Consumer Organisation found that 68% of consumers aged 18β35 consider a product's environmental impact before purchasing. For luxury goods, the bar is even higher β because luxury is supposed to represent the best of everything, including values.
Lab-Grown Does Not Mean Inferior
There is a persistent misconception that "lab-grown" means "fake" or "inferior." The reality is the opposite. Lab-grown moissanite is chemically and physically identical to natural moissanite β which itself is rarer than diamond in nature. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds, with the same crystal structure and optical properties as mined ones.
The only difference is origin. One comes from the earth (with all the environmental cost that entails). The other comes from a controlled laboratory environment. The stones are indistinguishable under normal conditions.
Why Moissanite Outshines Diamond
For watch bezels specifically, moissanite offers objective advantages over diamond:
- More fire: Moissanite's dispersion (0.104) is 2.4x that of diamond (0.044). This means more vivid rainbow flashes when light hits the stones.
- More brilliance: A higher refractive index (2.65 vs 2.42) means more total light return.
- Near-diamond hardness: At 9.25 Mohs, moissanite is the second-hardest gemstone after diamond. It will not scratch under normal wear.
- Better value: Moissanite costs 80β90% less than equivalent diamond, which means more stones, larger stones, and better overall visual impact at the same price point.
The European Shift
Europe is leading this transition. The EU's Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is pushing luxury brands toward full supply chain transparency. Consumers in Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and other markets are increasingly choosing lab-grown options not as a compromise, but as a preference.
At Paul Rich, we have built lab-grown stones into our premium lines from the start. The Moissanite Frosted Star Dust II collection uses trapezoid-cut lab-grown moissanite β each stone individually set into the bezel. The Diamond Astro collection uses lab-grown diamonds for an even more premium tier.
What This Means for You
Choosing lab-grown stones means:
- You know exactly where your stones come from
- You get more sparkle for your money
- You are not financing environmental destruction
- You are wearing a product that represents the future of the industry, not its past
