What ATM Means

ATM stands for "atmospheres" — a unit of pressure. One ATM equals the air pressure at sea level. When a watch is rated at 5 ATM, it means the case has been tested to withstand a static water pressure equivalent to 50 metres depth. The key word there is static.

5 ATM: The Practical Standard

Most Paul Rich watches are rated at 5 ATM; women's models are typically 3 ATM, and every model's exact rating is listed on its product page. In practice a 5 ATM rating means:

• Rain and hand washing: Yes.
• Saltwater contact: Rinse with fresh water afterwards to remove salt.
• Hot water and steam: Not recommended for prolonged exposure. It can degrade gaskets over time, on any watch.
• Scuba diving: No. You would need at least 10 ATM for recreational diving.
• Anything in between: Follow the guidance for your specific model on its product page.

Why "50 Metres" Does Not Mean 50 Metres

This is where it gets confusing. A 5 ATM (50m) rating does not mean you can dive to 50 metres depth. The rating refers to a static pressure test performed in a laboratory. In real-world conditions — where your wrist moves, water flows, and pressure fluctuates — the effective depth limit is much lower. The rating is a lab benchmark; for what that means day to day, follow the guidance for your specific model.

Tips for Keeping Your Watch Water-Safe

• Never operate the crown underwater. Pushing or pulling the crown with water contact can allow moisture to enter the case.
• Rinse after saltwater exposure. Salt crystals can damage gaskets if left to dry.
• Avoid extreme temperature changes. Going from a hot tub to cold pool water can cause condensation inside the case.
• Service gaskets regularly. Rubber gaskets that keep water out degrade over time. If your watch is more than a few years old, consider having the gaskets checked.
