Water resistance is one of the most misunderstood watch specifications. You see "5 ATM" on the case back, but what does that actually mean in practice? Can you swim with it? Shower? Dive? Here is the straightforward answer.

What ATM Means

ATM stands for "atmospheres" — a unit of pressure. One ATM equals the air pressure at sea level. When a watch is rated at 5 ATM, it means the case has been tested to withstand a static water pressure equivalent to 50 metres depth. The key word there is static.

Water Resistance Ratings Decoded

5 ATM: The Practical Standard

All Paul Rich watches are rated at 5 ATM. This means:

• Swimming in a pool: Yes. Completely safe.
• Swimming in the sea: Yes. Rinse with fresh water afterwards to remove salt.
• Showering: Yes. Though prolonged exposure to hot water and steam can degrade gaskets over time — this applies to any watch.
• Water sports (kayaking, surfing, paddle boarding): Yes.
• Scuba diving: No. You would need at least 10 ATM for recreational diving.

Why "50 Metres" Does Not Mean 50 Metres

This is where it gets confusing. A 5 ATM (50m) rating does not mean you can dive to 50 metres depth. The rating refers to a static pressure test performed in a laboratory. In real-world conditions — where your wrist moves, water flows, and pressure fluctuates — the effective depth limit is much lower. But 5 ATM absolutely covers everyday swimming and water exposure.

Tips for Keeping Your Watch Water-Safe

• Never operate the crown underwater. Pushing or pulling the crown with water contact can allow moisture to enter the case.
• Rinse after saltwater exposure. Salt crystals can damage gaskets if left to dry.
• Avoid extreme temperature changes. Going from a hot tub to cold pool water can cause condensation inside the case.
• Service gaskets regularly. Rubber gaskets that keep water out degrade over time. If your watch is more than a few years old, consider having the gaskets checked.
